Can you imagine traveling the world, photographing incredible places, and getting paid to do so? It may sound like a dream to many but, there are photographers who have this amazing career. When one thinks of these photographers, National Geographic, who focus on delivering magical imagery to everyone, comes to mind. Seems like an unattainable dream but, there are many other ways to become a travel photographer. Some other options that come to mind are working with tourism boards for specific countries, working with airlines, travel magazines, and newspapers. There are many possibilities for those looking to be a travel photographer. Having a good following on social media helps in tourism boards becoming interested in you as a photographer because it shows people are interested in your aesthetics and that people relate to your story-telling through imagery.
One thing to remember is it is not always a walk in the park. Here are some things to consider, as shared by fellow travel photographer, Hillary Fox in an article on Fstoppers: one must be resilient, tolerant, and flexible. Sometimes it might take 30 hours to get to a destination or you might be moving fairly quickly from one place to another. This can take a toll on one’s body. Sometimes you might be gone for a long while and being away from family is also difficult. Linsey Addario is a photojournalist who was covering a story in Gaza while being 7 months pregnant. Tolerance is important because every country is different. They all have their own traditions and sometimes might not sit well with a foreigner but must be respected because you are the visitor. It can sometimes be dangerous as well. So, think about these attributes one must have to become a successful travel photographer or photojournalist because they are necessary to continue one’s growth in the field.
